Lapping
video projection and performance, 2020
Lapping (Napping) is a performance piece that encapsulates the artist’s long-standing struggle with sleep, amplified by the isolating conditions surrounding the lockdown. The work features the artist taking a nap in white sheets drenched in a video projection of crashing waves. The imagery links sleep cycles to tides, and draws connection between biological processes within the body to oscillating rhythms found in nature.
Through Lapping, the artist investigates what is means to seek inner peace in an age of technological proliferation. Though there is an inherent contradiction in manufacturing a state of calm through digital medium, it’s also a means to reconcile. As Celine continue to engage in various forms of practice as mediation, she had hoped to return to simplicity in concept and execution that resists highly rigorous academic approaches in art school.
