solo exhibition,&#38;nbsp;FirstdraftCover image on home page by Nolan Ho Wung Murphy

Affection can mean feelings of fondness or acts of tenderness when one cares for someone; or it can be a disease, a malady. // Self-disclosure can be a double-edged sword. It draws people closer, yet too much knowledge has the potential to drive others away.

Presupposing one cannot fully know themselves in isolation, relationships become a mirror that reveal different angles of the self and our personal histories. At once, we are shaped by encounters and capable of imprinting on other people’s lives.

In Affection, Celine Cheung presents a candid self-examination touching on a spectrum of intimate experiences that are interconnected. The show features performances conceived and documented over the first 6 years of her practice alongside new works, contextualising them within a continuum where past and present selves meet. Affection treads through shades of grey in interpersonal relationships — implicating strangers and lovers alike. Inviting the audience to come into relation with the artist, this configuration of artworks interrogates ways of seeing and critically positions identity as a departure point to interrelations.

Affection brings together artworks that explore ideas of obsession and objectification; fantasy and culpability; sentimentality and subjectivity. The suite of works sees to her inhabiting different roles as victim and violator, to invoke discussions of power, agency and gender dynamics. Ever-present is an awareness of the gaze, paralleled with a relentless desire to self- dissect. Does reflection lend itself to lessons? Embracing the spirit of “do it for the plot”, the exhibition is part confessional, part narrative, as the artist negotiates between vulnerability and a refusal to be completely known.View the&#38;nbsp;Exhibition Roomsheet.

Check Your Baggage at the Door, 2024Photocollage prints,&#38;nbsp;30 x 43 cm eachIn this series, I scanned and digitally manipulated images of objects given to me by my past partners,
dates or flings, forming an unreliable archive of my love life. Earlier in the year, I was purging my
belongings Marie Kondo-style when I found this collection of letters and gifts. Moved by an urge to
preserve them, I turned to digitisation. In a manner inspired by x-ray baggage scanning at airports,
these collages peer into an inner lining of my emotional life. The work investigates how affection and
possession(s) become inextricable. It asks whether sentimentality is transferrable and invites the viewer to
piece together a story behind these objects.

Engraved mirrors and written text on gallery walls, 480 x 20 cm and dimensions variable,It is said that the human body completely renews itself every 7 years. Yet I still find myself unchanged in
essence, relating to my past self and falling back into cycles of patterns.
I scoured my diary for quotes to be engraved onto blank mirrors. Removed from its circumstances and
devoid of specificity, I reconfigured thoughts from varying time periods to form a vague narrative –– one of
constant questioning and fallibility.

回歸塔 Tower of Return(pages from a sketchbook, photos from a trip home)
Ink on paper, analogue film photo prints, 2019-23Exhibited at Kin, Pari
The Tower of Return is a local landmark in Tai Po, New Territories, commemorating the
return of Hong Kong in 1997. I promised my aunt I would go visit the landmark with her.
However, I didn’t keep my promise. And she has since passed away.
Using brush and line work, I sketched a semblance of the Tower from indistinct memories
of what it looked like. The suite of drawings is accompanied by a series of analogue
photos taken in Hong Kong, last time I returned in 2019. They were everyday scenes taken from the neighbourhood surrounding my aunt’s home.
Both the photographs and sketches evade a direct depiction of the subject matter,
emblematic of how my family speaks in euphemisms when it comes to loss.
The shape of grief ruptures, spirals and ascends…to a place I cannot return to.

忘川 River of OblivionEVA glue sigils embroidered on organza chiffon, 2022

Installation view in the Gravediggers Hut at HIDDEN Rookwood, 2023
In Chinese numerology, 99 signifies eternity. When my grandfather became terminally ill, my family sought solace in studying Buddhist beliefs. This installation features 99 intricate sigils floating along white mesh, imitating souls passing through to the afterlife in an underworld river. The fluid symbols are distorted renditions of the 8 auspicious signs in Buddhism morphed with other symbols in my personal lexicon. This work chronicles learning and reconnecting with spirituality, as death can both divide and bring people together. This work was created collaboratively with my father.

Winner of Rookwood Sculptures Award, 2023
“We were particularly taken with Celine Cheung’s contemplative work, River of Oblivion, and her considered reflections on ritual, family and culture. The location of the work inside the restored Grave Diggers Hut provided a quiet moment to observe Cheung’s 99 fluid sigils – based on Buddhist auspicious symbols – floating along white chiffon, like souls passing through to the afterlife in an underworld river.”

Wentworth Point Community Centre &#38;amp; Library, supported by PAS Open Digital residency

All that glitches is not gold investigates ghosts of generations past, glitches in the matrix, social mobility and the afterlife. In this exhibition, Celine stages a visual ballad of her family’s migration, told through Gothic landscapes and liminal spaces, with a touch of magical realism.

While searching for glitches in this picture-perfect suburb, Celine discovers local sites that parallel her family’s journey, such as the heritage-listed shipwrecks and the State Abattoir. Using composite landscapes of Hong Kong and Homebush Bay, Celine reconstructs her family’s journey in a fantastical light&#38;nbsp;—&#38;nbsp;from crossing the Sham Chun River between China and Hong Kong, to factories that echo past industries in Sydney Olympic Park, and finally arriving at the aspirational area of Wentworth Point.

Through digital collages and immersive installation, Celine conjures up an imaginary threshold between life and death, inspired by dreams, Buddhist sigils, hostile architecture and celestial phenomena.

Ebb and Flow
duo exhibition with Sarah Sen, 2021
The Waiting Room Project
Ebb and Flow is an exhibition that captures the experience of going through the motions, navigating the familiar and unknown. Aiming to find beauty in the mundane, Celine Cheung and Sarah Sen take inspiration from patterns in everyday sights — the overlooked, forgotten and empty spaces.

Featuring detailed drawings and meditative mark-making, Celine and Sarah use collage, photocopy and tracing to create layered and intricate artworks. Thinking of their art practice as an accumulation of experiences, they revisit and reconsider past works. The result is a collection of photographs, drawings and collages spanning 5 years of their friendship.

Through making art together, Celine and Sarah find ways to navigate the flow of life while combating everyday anxieties. Both of them seek to reconnect with art-making and to experience ‘flow state’, which means a state of mind where one is completely immersed in an enjoyable and nourishing activity.

Reworked Collages

Growing up, I’ve always enjoyed doodling on scrap paper. It’s much less intimidating for me to scribble on fragments than pristine, white paper.&#38;nbsp;Through collaging drawn-on pieces, I wanted to revive the playfulness in drawing and to combat learnt perfectionism as an adult.

These collages are composed of drawn-on ‘scraps’ and personal ephemera including museum pamphlets, readings and scraps. It speaks to a feeling of constriction while navigating institutions as an artist. Using methods inspired by black-out poetry, fragmenting and tearing, I am interested in erasure and the loss of individuality, due to isolating modern structures.

I included travel photos from my personal collection in the exhibition. While previously I never considered them to be a part of my practice, they are important vessels of memory in my life. These snapshots captured a time when I flowed freely in the world and saw sights in a new light.</description>

Drive-invideo installation in vehicle, 2021

______ and _____ sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

In this video installation, I explored my own complicated feelings towards desire, &#38;nbsp;comprising a mix of discomfort, confusion and yearning. ‘Drive-in’ illustrates the ambiguity inherent in queer coming-of-age experiences, represented by disembodied, genderless parts.

A single car, parked in an oval at night.

But You’re Not Innocent
Ink with perticipatory performance, 2019

This performance was first shown live at Analysand by Roller Door Projects.&#38;nbsp;An audience member
of mostly strangers were invited to leave handprints on my naked back, using sumi-ink that I grinded
relentlessly from an ink stone while I knelt on the ground.
But You’re Not Innocent is a meditation on consent, and what it means to inhabit a female body bound by societal judgement that values sexual purity. The manual grinding of ink speaks to gendered labour and blame, that is often placed upon victims of assault. In light of Asian bodies being continually subjected to ongoing racial and gendered violence, this artwork
asks viewers to reflect on power, consent and agency.

7 Minutes in HeavenPerformance on resin sculpture with video projection, 2021

In a performance that renders violation and tenderness indistinguishable, I intend to expose the raw awkwardness when the secret of a crush is brought into light and the strangeness when wet dreams invade reality.

The sculptural component of the work consists of a blank mask, glowing with a projection of a blinking face. This uncanny visage is an animated composite image of all those who had been objects of my affection, whose images I collected from their social media profiles.

This performance was performed live at:
